Pre-Pointe Assessment Brisbane | Dance Physiotherapy for Safe Pointe Readiness

What is a pre-pointe assessment?

A pre-pointe assessment is a structured physiotherapy evaluation designed to determine whether a ballet dancer is physically ready to safely begin dancing en pointe. It is an important checkpoint in a young dancer’s training, as progressing to pointe work before adequate strength, control, alignment, and technique can significantly increase the risk of injury to the feet, ankles, knees, and spine.

While the decision to begin pointe work is traditionally guided by a dance teacher’s ongoing assessment of technique, maturity, and artistry, a physiotherapist-led pre-pointe assessment provides an objective, clinically informed evaluation of the physical requirements needed for pointe work. Together, this combination supports a safer and more informed transition to pointe.

Why is a pre-pointe assessment important?

Dancing en pointe places significantly increased load through the lower limbs and requires a high level of strength, control, and alignment. If a dancer begins too early, or without sufficient physical preparation, it can place unnecessary stress on developing bones and soft tissue structures.

A pre-pointe assessment helps ensure the dancer has developed the necessary physical foundations to safely progress, reducing injury risk and supporting long-term performance health and sustainability in dance training.

What does the assessment include?

A pre-pointe assessment by a physiotherapist typically evaluates the key physical requirements for pointe readiness, including:

We also observe movement quality to identify any compensations that may increase injury risk once en pointe, such as ankle instability, collapsing through the arches, or reduced pelvic control.

What happens if a dancer is not ready?

Not yet being ready for pointe work is very common and is not a setback. Instead, it provides valuable insight into specific areas that can be improved to support safe progression.

If required, we provide a tailored strengthening and conditioning program focused on developing foot and ankle strength, stability, balance, and control. This ensures the dancer builds a strong foundation before transitioning safely to pointe work.

Most dancers who are not yet ready at their initial assessment are able to progress within a structured preparation period with targeted exercise and training guidance.
